Implicit Bias Training
Implicit bias refers to one’s unconscious beliefs, attitudes and associations towards any social group (i.e. race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, physical abilities, etc.). People often attribute certain characteristics and qualities to all members of a particular group without accounting for individuality due to their implicit biases. These biases occur unintentionally and automatically, without the individual being consciously aware. They influence people’s thoughts and actions and are often unrelated to their intentions. Implicit biases are a result of our brain trying to create order and find patterns to deal with complexity. Our upbringing, culture and the media, to which we are exposed, also contribute to the creation and maintenance of biases. In turn these biases influence to a great extent our decisions and the way we behave towards particular groups. When one has a position of power, their implicit biases can determine who is hired, promoted, terminated, etc. Therefore, it is imperative to recognize our implicit biases so our actions are not dictated by them.
This module has several objectives:
This program will engage participants in in-depth discussions in small groups in an open and safe environment. Videos, simulations and multiple examples will be utilized to make the material understandable and applicable to one’s experiences. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of their own biases and a clear plan on how to minimize them.
