Integrating Diversity and Inclusion in
Faith-based Organizations

Across physical structures and denominations, within congregations, Christian colleges, ministries, and other faith-based organizations and groups, many leaders struggle with how to be more open to the diverse backgrounds and specific needs of those who they serve. The National Diversity Collaborative (NDC) consultant is equipped to help faith-based organizations and groups identify behaviors and attitudes that are contrary to the organization’s beliefs. The consultant collaborates with faith leaders to identify possible gaps in current organizational structures, policies, and norms that may interfere with the overall mission of the organization.

Religion informs people’s attitudes and behaviors about all aspects of their lives including work. NDC provides tools and recommendations necessary to help leaders focus more on recognizing and using the talents of all members within their organizations. The goal is to create a more harmonious environment that enables, empowers, and engages all persons of the organizations or groups, but also extends to the communities they serve. Following are some of the approaches NDC will use to accomplish specific organizational goals:

  • Observe faith-based meetings and/or activities and interview members to access the current climate of the organization.
  • Assess physical displays such as wall art/hangings and publications and other artifacts to identify messages that do not represent the organization’s message of embracing difference and inclusiveness.
  • Develop a mentoring program that encourages open dialogue internal to the organization, with the goal of building partnerships with members of the community.

Having a diverse and inclusive culture is more than just a popular idiom. It is at the heart of faith-based organizations and groups. Diversity and inclusion are critical for growth and success of ministry in our society. Growing in diversity and embracing inclusion takes intentional effort. Leaders must be open to learn; educate potential partners about their mission and vision; and create an opportunity for the community to be strengthened from their efforts.
